Vodafone Mobile Group is a mobile network operator with headquarters in Newbury, Berkshire, England, United Kingdom. With a market value of approximately £100 billion as of December 2007, Vodafone Mobile is the biggest mobile telecommunications network company in the world when it comes to turnover. As of now, Vodafone holds equity interests in 25 countries. Aside from that, it has partner networks in 39 countries.
By the 31st of January 2007, Vodafone already had 200 million proportionate customers in their 25 markets. (By "proportionate customers", it means that if Vodafone has a 40% stake in one business that has a million customers, then that's counted as 400,000). With this as a measure, then Vodafone ranks as the second largest mobile telecommunications group in the whole world, next to China Mobile. The countries wherein it holds the most customers are Germany, United Kingdom, Italy, India, Turkey, Spain, United States, and Egypt.
Vodafone Australia is a subsidiary of Vodafone Mobile Group which holds operations in Australia. Vodafone Australia is a wholly owned, non-listed subsidiary of Vodafone Mobile Group which focuses only on providing consumers with mobile telephony services. It was founded in 1992 and holds headquarters in Chatswood, New South Wales. The phone products offered by Vodafone include 3G postpaid and prepaid mobile services using the GSM mobile network. Vodafone also offers mobile Internet service, also known as "Vodafone live!". As of June 2005, Vodafone already had approximately 18.2 million customers in Australia. This means that the company already has a 90.1 per cent mobile penetration rate.
During September 1993, the company started providing GSM mobile telecommunications services which included network coverage in Canberra, Melbourne, and Sydney. As of March 1994, Vodafone's mobile network services were extended to include the cities of Adelaide, Perth, and Brisbane. The company also offers GPRS to its customers and continually upgrades its network so that the company will be able to deliver mobile Internet services at faster speeds. The prepaid services of the company is growing. As of June 2005, mobile users who were utilising Vodafone's prepaid services were 47%. This percentage is expected to rise to around 54.4% by 2008. There are approximately 16,000 retail outlets in Australia that sell Vodafone phones. Among these are 170 stores which are Vodafone-branded.
