Don't Keep Sensitive Records On Your Mobiles
Wednesday November 26, 2008
Mobiles are not the most secure devices in the world. Unlike a laptop, which it would be hard to miss if it had been stolen, or a PC, which could be locked behind closed doors, mobiles are small enough that they can be stolen with ease and you may not even notice for several hours. If your mobile phone happens to have sensitive information about you, your business or your family, it probably won't be too hard for a thief to use it to cause you even greater harm.
When it comes to 3G business solutions and other business mobiles, any company that issues 3G mobiles with office features that will send and receive sensitive information should have a usage policy in place. Making sure people transfer data to more secure facilities on a regular basis (perhaps at least once a day) and even issuing accessories for mobiles to keep them strapped to employees can both help to minimise security risks to information on mobiles.
For personal use of mobiles, it is not a good idea to use mobiles as a notebook for all the information that you often forget. NEVER store the PINs to your bank account and credit cards or the details for your online banking on your mobiles. It is always better to memorise such details as writing them down puts your finances at risk.
