The mythical no-frills mobiles

Wednesday April 23, 2008

Mobiles aren't just about communication anymore, there's no use denying it. They're mass consumer products now rather than the personal luxury and business tool they once were. Most people want more in their mobiles: good cameras, good music playback, good gaming potential and many other features.

Some people would prefer a budget model that only features the bare minimum of features, just calls and text messages. While this may sound like a cheaper option, it's unlikely that it would be. For one, as it could only compete on price, the basic mobile phone would need to be in high demand. Unfortunately for those few who would like the option, there just isn't enough demand to make the mass production of such mobiles viable.

Complaints about missing features would also likely abound. Budget mobiles could have a very simple interface without an address book or any other practical features. Including these makes it just as worthwhile these days as including other seemingly unnecessary features. When the computing power found in most modern mobiles is as cheap as it is, there's no point in reducing features to reduce costs.
