Should messaging be free?
Wednesday May 14, 2008
Mobiles are big money, and much of that money is made from text messages due to the incredible difference in cost to transfer data compared to the standard pricing. While phone calls may be somewhat costly in terms of data transference, an SMS is comparatively almost non-existent. About 140 bytes is transferred in the maximum 160 character text message. Compared to other data transfers, this makes the average per message price of a text message astronomical.
Many mobile phone plans offer a somewhat workable solution to this vast gap between message cost and price by using a capped plan. Mobile phone companies such as 3 Mobile offer capped plans that charge up to a certain amount for calls and text messages and then give free services up to a much higher value than the cap. By doing this, 3 Mobile can charge a reasonable amount for their services while appearing to be giving a much higher value.
