Design of mobiles is as important as service

Thursday May 8, 2008

Mobiles see frequent use, yet many people still don't see the value in paying slightly more for superior functionality. For a product that will accompany the user wherever they go and will be accessed on a daily basis, seemingly little concern is placed on usability before a purchase is made. The aesthetic appeal of a mobile or its price range will often be the deciding factors when buying mobiles, but by focusing on other aspects, the mobile phone experience can become a pleasure.

User interface

The user interfaces of mobiles have long been maligned as clunky and confusing, presenting menus in non-instinctive ways that frustrate users. Even very popular mobiles have had complaints about user interface levelled at them. It seems unusual that a difficult to use mobile phone would gain popularity, but the fact that many if not most outlets for mobiles do not have working models of phones on display coupled with hard sell advertising campaigns means consumers cannot make a reasonable judgment.

If you can, look for reviews online of the mobiles you are interested in and for opinions of their ease of use. Ask around your friends to see if anyone has the kind of mobiles you are looking for so you might experiment with the interface.

Extra features

If a mobile phone can offer you features that you would otherwise be carrying around an additional device to use, then you may want to consider mobiles that implement them. High quality cameras are now quite popular on mobiles as many people find they would like the opportunistic shots they take to look reasonably good. Music and video playback have also become popular features that make the need for other portable media players redundant. Internet access has become very popular, as people now prefer constant access to information online.
