What to do with old mobiles?

30 July 2008

Disposing of old mobiles is a tricky thing, as many people are unaware of the amount of waste they can leave. There are, luckily, programs for disposing of old mobiles, so that they can be rendered less harmful to the environment. Some of the materials in mobiles can even be recycled, but this requires that they be disposed of correctly.

Recycling your old mobile phone can even help out charities. For instance, if you live in Queensland, by depositing your old mobiles in a specially marked Aussie Recycling Program bin, the Cerebral Palsy League of Queensland can receive between $3.00 and $5.00. The mobiles are then refurbished and repaired so that they may be shipped to developing nations in order to provide affordable mobile phones. Mobiles that are too damaged are instead dismantled for any usable parts to use in the repair of other mobiles in better condition. Due to how advanced 3G mobiles are, they may be used in better developed but struggling countries, as a 3G network would be necessary for their use. This could, however, provide 3G business solutions to businesses in places that may otherwise be unable to afford it.

By disposing of your old mobiles in a responsible manner, you can limit the effects that harmful metals contained in mobiles can have on the environment. It may be tempting to play mobile phone hockey with your old phones, or to see if your old mobiles will blend, but you can limit the danger to the environment and help out developing countries by doing the right thing and recycling your mobiles.
