Stuck with a mobile phone?
1 August 2008
Mobile phone plans that include a mobile phone as part of the contract can sometimes lead people to being stuck with old mobile phone technologies. People who are new to 3G mobiles in particular can often choose plans that include a 3G mobile phone that is far too basic. This means that once the mobile phone user has become familiar with the features the 3G mobile phone can offer, they may want a more advanced or better designed mobile phone.
The problem here is that the option of buying a new mobile phone as part of a new contract is not available. Some mobile phone plans will allow users to buy out of the plan, but this can be incredibly costly. A user who cannot afford to buy a mobile phone outright may also be unable to buy out of a contract.
Planning ahead is thus important when choosing a new mobile phone. If you will be tied to a contract for a long time, then take into account the likelihood that you may start using more advanced features if they are available to you on your mobile phone. For instance, perhaps you don't think you will browse the web on your mobile phone so you choose the mobile phone plan with the lowest data allowance and a mobile phone not optimised for web use. This may be a fair enough assumption to make when you have yet to have access to the Internet through your mobile phone, but circumstances can change once you become used to a new feature. Certain mobile phone brands will generally offer better quality in specific areas, so look around for the right mobile phone for you.
