Mobiles as vital tool of self defence

19 September 2008

Mobiles are one of the most vital tools of modern self defence. Many people don't realise just how much safer we can be by using our mobiles in the right way, though we can also increase our risks if we allow mobiles to do the thinking for us.

Using mobiles for self defence is about more than just using a phone as a last resort impact weapon. By having access to a line of communication as well as Web access with 3G mobiles, you can call for assistance as well as plan your routes using online maps. GPS technology in some mobile phones means that you can even work out where you are on a given map near exactly.

There are ways that mobiles can detract from your awareness, however, and this could throw you off guard. For one, texting or making calls when you need your full attention elsewhere can easily lead to accidents and makes you an easier target for opportunistic assailants. Also, relying on a map or GPS route planning entirely is never advisable. If you know that a route looks to be planned through a bad neighbourhood, then common sense should tell you that it might be a better idea to find another route.
