Check Your Area For Reception

Monday January 12, 2009

Not all networks for mobiles have a very good reach beyond metropolitan centres, so make sure any network you are interested in reaches you, and don't just assume. While the widespread Telstra network gets a lot of competition from networks such as Optus, there can be points on the outskirts of metropolitan centres that do not get reliable reception from smaller networks.

This can be troublesome for people using mobiles in suburbs on the outskirts of major cities. When an assumption is made that networks would obviously reach to the outskirts of a city, as it is still nearby a metropolitan zone, useless mobile phone plans can be taken out. Is there really any point to 3G mobiles and the benefits they offer if there is no service where you live?

If you want to avoid the unpleasant experience of discovering that you have joined a network with little to no reception where you live, then be sure to ask your neighbours or friends nearby if they are on the network you are interested in. Try to remember whether your friends have complained about a lack of reception when visiting your place and what network they are on.

Asking your friends what network they are on may also help you to choose one, as many mobile phone plans offer lower cost or bonus calls to other users of the same network. Check out some of the Virgin Mobile plans or 3 Mobile plans for examples of such deals. If you find that many of your friends are with the same provider, it could be worthwhile looking at their deals.
