Mobiles more popular than landlines

Friday November 27, 2009

After years or growing popularity and usage, mobiles have finally surpassed landlines as the most prevalent form of phone use within Australia, according to the largest independent Australian research company, Roy Morgan Research.

From the six months to September 2009, Roy Morgan Research found that 15.13 million or 85.2 per cent of the Australian population now own or use a mobile phone. This is the first time the number of mobiles has exceeded the number of Australian households with a fixed line connection, which was at 15.08 million or 84.9 per cent.

While landlines have been steadily decreasing since 2000 at the same time that mobiles popularity has surged, this is the first time mobiles have actually overtaken as the dominate method of phone communication.

Roy Morgan Research noted that while growth has remained steady for mobiles, the last six months resulted in some of the biggest growth recorded for mobiles while it was the biggest decrease in the six months for the proportion of the Australian population who have a fixed line connection at home, a drop from 88.0 per cent to 84.9 per cent.

"It was only a matter of time before mobile phones became more popular than the traditional method of fixed line." Roy Morgan Research Industry Communications Director, Norman Morris stated.

"The Australian population have adopted mobile phones at a steady rate which still has some room to grow, though it will be interesting to see whether the number of Australians with a fixed line at home will continue to decline or plateau."
